Enzo Maresca’s tough start as Chelsea head coach continued with a 4-1 defeat to Celtic in a pre-season friendly in Indiana. Celtic, ahead in their pre-season preparations, exploited Chelsea’s defensive frailties. Matt O’Riley opened the scoring for Celtic and assisted Kyogo Furuhashi for the second. Despite Robert Sanchez’s efforts in goal, Chelsea struggled defensively. In the second half, Chelsea dominated but conceded two quick goals: Benoit Badiashile’s error led to Luis Palma’s goal, and Palma then assisted Mikey Johnston for the fourth. Christopher Nkunku scored a late penalty after Raheem Sterling was fouled, offering little consolation. Chelsea’s defense remains a significant concern for Maresca.
