Arsenal clinched a place in the Champions League round of 16 with a 2-1 comeback win at Girona yesterday, thanks to goals from Jorginho and Ethan Nwaneri. The victory marked Arsenal’s sixth win in eight games, securing third place in the league phase with 19 points and avoiding the two-legged playoff round.
Despite Arsenal’s early dominance, Girona took the lead in the 28th minute when Arnaut Danjuma capitalized on a goalkeeping error by Neto to slot home. Jorginho equalized from the penalty spot 10 minutes later after Arnau Martínez fouled Thomas Partey. Nwaneri, making his first Champions League start, then put Arsenal ahead with a stunning curling effort from the edge of the box just before halftime.
Girona pushed for an equaliser, and Cristhian Stuani thought he had levelled the score in the 76th minute, but his goal was ruled offside. Raheem Sterling missed a chance to seal the win in stoppage time, seeing his penalty saved by Pau López after a handball by Alejandro Frances. The result ensures Arsenal’s progression to the knockout stages.
