Apple’s Latest Updates: New Features and Security Enhancements
Apple released the iOS 17.5 update on Monday, delivering security patches and new features for iPhones. The update includes a puzzle game called Quartiles for Apple News Plus subscribers and enhancements to the News app, allowing offline access and leaderboard tracking for puzzles.
Users can download the update via Settings > General > Software Update. Quartiles, a word game, is accessible through the News app’s Puzzles section. A new feature enables subscribers to compare daily puzzle scores with others through Game Center integration.
Additionally, iOS 17.5 introduces Offline Mode for Apple News Plus, enabling offline reading by toggling Automatic Downloads in Settings. Users can manage download preferences under Download Options. Notably, the update allows EU residents to download apps from developers’ websites, with guidelines available on Apple’s site.
New Pride Collection wallpapers featuring “Pride” in various LGBTQ+ community-inspired color schemes are included. A Repair State mode facilitates iPhone repairs by preparing devices for service without turning off Find My.
The Podcast widget now changes color to match the artwork of the podcast being played. Spotlight Search now displays recently played podcasts, aiding quick access. The Books app introduces a reading counter and goal-setting feature.
iOS 17.5 also includes a feature to detect unknown third-party tracking devices, alerting users if such a device is detected. However, it’s recommended to consult the device’s manual for disabling it.
The update’s release notes highlight the Pride Radiance wallpaper, Apple News improvements, and Cross-Platform Tracking Detection. Offline mode in Apple News Plus provides access to the Today feed and News Plus tab without internet, while Quartiles offers a new word game experience. The Scoreboard feature in News Plus Puzzles tracks player data for various games. Cross-Platform Tracking Detection notifies users of compatible Bluetooth trackers moving with them, irrespective of device pairing.
Overall, iOS 17.5 enhances user experience with new features and security enhancements.
