Bluetooth 6.0: What’s New and Exciting?
The Bluetooth Special Interest Group (SIG) has just released Bluetooth Core Specification version 6.0, the latest update to the popular wireless technology. This version introduces new features and improvements, with the standout being “Bluetooth Channel Sounding.” This feature brings “true” distance awareness to Bluetooth devices, allowing for highly accurate location tracking. It can pinpoint the exact position of accessories with centimeter-level precision and works over long distances.
Channel Sounding will enhance the user experience, especially for “Find My” solutions, making it easier to locate lost items. It’s also secure, ensuring that only authorized users can unlock doors or access secured areas in buildings using Bluetooth-enabled security systems. Developers are expected to find many new uses for this precise location awareness in their applications.
Besides Channel Sounding, Bluetooth 6.0 improves data transmission and efficiency. For example, the Decision-Based Advertising Filtering feature enhances Bluetooth Low Energy Extended Advertising, making scanning faster and more efficient. Another feature, Monitoring Advertisers, helps save energy when a host can’t tell if a device is still nearby. The Isochronous Adaptation Layer also allows larger data frames to be sent in smaller packets, which will reduce latency and improve reliability for sensitive applications like audio devices.
While Bluetooth 6.0 introduces exciting new capabilities, it may take a few years before these features are available in consumer products. So, while the updates look promising, it’s worth keeping expectations in check for now.
Fun Fact: The name “Bluetooth” comes from a 10th-century Scandinavian king, Harald Bluetooth, who united Denmark and Norway—just like Bluetooth technology unites devices today!
