How to turn off Meta AI
Meta has integrated its AI assistant extensively across its platforms, making it nearly inescapable. The AI assistant often encourages interaction by displaying summaries of posts, suggesting follow-up questions, and even trying to initiate conversations. Recognizing this could feel overwhelming for users, Meta has unfortunately made it so you can’t fully remove the AI assistant from its apps.
However, there are ways to reduce its presence. Here’s how you can minimize Meta AI on Facebook and Instagram, as well as remove its automated summaries.
Muting Meta AI
Since Meta doesn’t allow for a complete removal of the AI assistant, muting is the best alternative. Follow these steps on both Facebook and Instagram:
- Open the Facebook app and log in.
- Tap the “search” icon, which may also bring up Meta AI.
- You’ll see a prompt to “Ask Meta AI anything.”
- Tap the blue navigation triangle in the top right to open the chatbot.
- Select the “i” in a blue circle at the top of the screen.
- Tap the mute option, found next to the “share” and “profile” buttons.
- Choose how long you want to mute Meta AI—options range from 15 minutes to “until I change it.”
The same steps apply for muting Meta AI on Instagram. You’ll still see Meta AI in the search bar, but its presence will be less intrusive.
Turning Off Meta AI’s Summaries
Meta AI’s summaries can be helpful for condensing lengthy or complex posts but can also clutter your screen. If you find them unnecessary, here’s how to turn them off:
