Nova Launcher Faces Uncertain Future After Branch Layoffs

In July 2022, mobile app metrics firm Branch acquired the popular Android app, Nova Launcher. At the time, Nova’s founder, Kevin Barry, reassured users that Branch wouldn’t interfere with the app’s development. Branch, focused on tracking app links, seemed like a reasonable fit for Nova, given its search tool that helped users access deep links within apps.

However, two years later, Nova Launcher is in a challenging position. According to Nova’s official X account (formerly Twitter) and Discord, Branch has drastically reduced the Nova team from around a dozen people to just Barry working alone. This move was part of a massive layoff at Branch, affecting over 100 employees.

Barry remains committed to working on Nova Launcher but with fewer resources, meaning future updates will likely be scaled back. Support, marketing, and customer correspondence are also expected to be limited.

Nova Launcher has long been a favorite among Android users for customizing their home screens and app trays, helping them avoid unwanted OEM software. While the app isn’t dead, its future is uncertain as it may struggle to launch new features or continue growing. Barry hopes to keep Nova going as long as possible, but the app’s once-promising future now faces significant constraints.
