OpenAI Rolls Out Free Image Generation in ChatGPT-4o

OpenAI has officially made its ChatGPT-4o image-generation tool available to all users, marking another major step in AI accessibility. Previously limited to paid subscribers, the feature now allows free users to generate images directly within ChatGPT, though with a limit of three images per day. Paid users, including those on the $20/month and $200/year plans, can generate images without restrictions.
The rollout comes after a surge in interest, with users creating AI-generated images in various artistic styles, including Studio Ghibli-inspired animations. The demand was so high that OpenAI’s CEO, Sam Altman, noted server strain during the initial launch.
This move further solidifies OpenAI’s position in the ongoing AI race, competing with Google’s Gemini, Microsoft Copilot, and other emerging models. While OpenAI continues to expand its creative AI capabilities, challenges remain, including concerns over copyright, energy consumption, and the impact on creative industries.
With image generation now widely available and video creation via OpenAI’s Sora on the horizon, AI-powered content creation is becoming more accessible than ever. As competition heats up, advancements in AI-generated media are set to accelerate rapidly.
