Sonos Working on New Premium Soundbar

As Sonos works to fix bugs and improve its unpopular mobile app redesign, the company is also focused on new hardware, including an ultrapremium soundbar codenamed Lasso. This new device, currently in limited beta testing, is expected to succeed the Sonos Arc and may cost over $1,200.

Design and Features

The Lasso soundbar looks similar to the Arc but features completely redesigned internal components and speaker drivers. It will be the first Sonos product to integrate technology from Mayht, a startup Sonos acquired in 2022 for $100 million. Mayht’s innovative audio transducers, which allow for smaller and lighter designs without sacrificing quality, will be used in this soundbar.

Performance Enhancements

Sources indicate that the Lasso will deliver significantly better bass performance than the Arc, which often requires additional equipment like a Sub or Sub Mini for optimal sound. With the higher price point, the Lasso is expected to provide top-tier home theater audio independently.

New Capabilities

The Lasso soundbar will support Bluetooth audio playback, a feature not available in previous Sonos soundbars. It will also include a physical switch to disable built-in microphones and is designed to work with the Sonos Ace headphones for private listening with spatial audio.

Sonos App Updates

Meanwhile, Sonos continues to update its mobile app to address customer frustrations. Despite efforts to improve the app, the Android version currently holds a low 1.2-star average rating, while the Apple version fares slightly better due to older positive reviews balancing out recent complaints.

Conclusion

Sonos is committed to enhancing both its hardware and software offerings. The Lasso soundbar represents a significant step forward in home audio, incorporating advanced technology from the Mayht acquisition. As the company addresses issues with its app, it remains to be seen how these new developments will be received by consumers.
