Red Barrels spent about six years developing The Outlast Trials, with a large number of prototypes along the way. Co-founder Philippe Morin said early playtests did not land as the team had hoped, prompting the studio to rethink its approach.

From endless replayability back to Outlast

Morin told GameSpot that the developers initially pushed too hard toward a systemic, random experience with seemingly endless replay value. Those early tests exposed problems with the direction, and the team reworked the design to bring it closer to the tension and identity of the Outlast series.

The account offers a look at how the cooperative horror game evolved through iteration rather than a straight path from concept to release.
