iOS 18.1: Are We Losing Our Attention Spans?

1 min read

The upcoming iOS 18.1 update, set for release on October 28, brings Apple Intelligence, packed with summarization features that could further reduce our attention spans. With these updates, key areas like Safari, Mail, and Notifications will start offering quick summaries, making it easier to digest content but also encouraging less reading overall. For instance, long articles on Safari can be summarized in a few lines when switching to reader mode, and you can even pull summaries for specific paragraphs.

In the Mail app, instead of previewing the first few words of an email, iOS 18.1 will show one-line summaries in your inbox. Notifications will also be condensed into single-sentence summaries for each app’s recent activity, allowing users to catch up in a glance. A new Smart Reply option will let you send quick responses with just one tap, similar to Gmail.

Writing tools are also getting an upgrade. Like Grammarly, iOS 18.1 will underline errors in your texts and allow you to refine your message’s tone to be more Friendly, Professional, or Concise. The update also enhances Siri, adding a glowing animation and improving its memory and context handling, making it easier to interact with. You can now type commands to Siri and use voice prompts in the Photos app to find specific pictures or create movies.

The update will initially be available through a waitlist system and will roll out to iPhone 16 and iPhone 15 Pro models, with Apple Intelligence starting in the US and in English.
