Boosting .ng Domains

Nigeria Internet Registration Association (NiRA) is pushing to grow adoption of Nigeria’s .ng domain by 30% year-on-year, as part of a broader plan to strengthen the country’s digital identity.

Despite Nigeria’s massive population—over 240 million—the number of registered .ng domains remains surprisingly low at around 240,000. This gap becomes even clearer when compared to countries like South Africa, which has over a million domain registrations with a much smaller population. NiRA sees closing this gap as critical to building a stronger digital economy.

Driving Adoption

To increase uptake, NiRA plans to invest heavily in awareness campaigns and marketing. The goal is to make .ng domains more visible and attractive to businesses, creators, and everyday internet users.

Beyond marketing, the association is also working on improving infrastructure. This includes strengthening system performance, security, and reliability to support a growing number of registrations. Plans to implement DNSSEC (a security layer for domain systems) and enhance cybersecurity measures are already in motion.

Policy and Structural Changes

NiRA’s strategy isn’t just technical—it also involves governance reforms. The organization aims to align with global best practices by separating management from oversight and introducing a dedicated executive team to handle day-to-day operations.

There’s also a push for stronger collaboration with government bodies and industry partners. By working with policymakers, NiRA hopes to create regulations and incentives that encourage more organizations to adopt .ng domains.

Why It Matters

Increasing .ng adoption isn’t just about numbers—it’s about ownership and visibility. A stronger local domain presence helps Nigerian businesses build trust online while reinforcing the country’s digital identity on the global stage.

If successful, this push could reshape how Nigeria shows up on the internet—moving from low adoption to a more locally rooted and recognizable digital ecosystem.
