If you’ve been hoping for a foldable iPhone, your wait might be almost over. According to Digitimes, Apple is reportedly working on a foldable iPhone that could be released as early as 2026. This would mark a significant milestone for Apple, being its first entry into foldable display technology and a major evolution for the iPhone.
This year, we’re expecting the iPhone 16 lineup, and next year the iPhone 17 series might include the first iPhone Ultra. Looking further ahead, the iPhone 18 series could introduce the foldable iPhone.
Rumors about a foldable iPhone have been circulating for years. Earlier reports suggested Apple was considering two designs, but the Digitimes report indicates that Apple has now decided on a specific design.
Reports from various Korean media also indicate that Apple started researching foldable technologies in 2024, signing a contract with Samsung. If Apple follows a two-year product development cycle, we could see a foldable iPhone in 2026.
The chosen design appears to be a clamshell, top-down folding style, similar to the Motorola Razr series or Samsung Galaxy Z Flip. When opened, the iPhone Fold might be similar in size to current iPhone models. It’s unclear if the iPhone Fold will have a cover display, as many clamshell flip phones do.
Those hoping for a foldable iPhone similar to the Galaxy Z Fold, OnePlus Open, or Google Pixel Fold may be disappointed for now.
This isn’t the first time we’ve heard about Apple’s interest in foldable displays. There have been rumors about a foldable iPad or MacBook, but it looks like the iPhone will be the first to get this technology.
Personally, I think a foldable iPhone would be exciting. Initially, I was skeptical about foldable phones, but after the advent of Android phones like the OnePlus Open, Google Pixel Fold, and Motorola Razr 2024, I’ve come to appreciate the benefits.
