Google to Launch Android 15 Developer Preview This Week
According to a public-facing comment in the Android Open Source Project, Google is gearing up to launch the initial preview of Android 15 later this week.
The comment was made by a Google developer on Tuesday, indicating that the first Android 15 Developer Preview, internally codenamed “Vanilla Ice Cream,” is slated for release on February 15, 2024, referred to as “Android V.” This release schedule is a bit later than last year’s Android 14 preview, which launched on February 8, 2023.
It’s expected that the Android 15 Developer Preview will be limited to Pixel devices initially, following the pattern of previous years. Users currently on beta updates will likely remain on Android 14, as Developer Preview releases are generally less stable and intended for developer use.
This Developer Preview will provide a preliminary look at the features and improvements to come in Google’s next mobile OS update. Throughout the last year, there have been hints at new features, such as the “Private Space” feature discovered by the APK Insight team, which allows users to hide and lock specific apps in their app list. These hints offer insight into what may be included in Android 15, but the Developer Preview will offer a more comprehensive view of the upcoming changes.
