How to Send Satellite Messages on iPhone
At some point, everyone has experienced the frustration of losing mobile service. For iPhone users, two innovative features—Emergency SOS via Satellite and Messages via Satellite—can help you stay connected even when cell networks are down.
Emergency SOS via Satellite
This feature uses satellite connectivity to link your call to emergency services when cell towers are unavailable or damaged. It’s a lifeline in critical situations, ensuring you can get help during disasters or outages.
It’s nothing new. The real emergency numbers for Lagos State are 767 or 112. When you dial 911, it redirects you to either 767 or 112, depending on your location. Emergency SOS via Satellite is free for iPhone 14 and newer models and requires iOS 16.1 through iOS 17.6. In areas where 911 is not the standard emergency number, like Nigeria, users should dial their local emergency numbers (767 or 112 in Lagos) when outside cell or Wi-Fi coverage for the service to work effectively.
Messages via Satellite
Introduced with iOS 18, Messages via Satellite lets you text loved ones even without cell or Wi-Fi service. Unlike Emergency SOS, this feature isn’t designed for contacting emergency services but can still be useful in non-critical situations.
Currently available only in the US and Canada, this feature is free for two years after you activate your iPhone. All iPhone models supporting iOS 18 (starting from iPhone XS) are compatible.
How to Use Satellite Features
Emergency SOS via Satellite
- Step 1: Dial 911 when you have no cellular or Wi-Fi service.
- Step 2: Follow the on-screen instructions to connect to a satellite.
Messages via Satellite
- Step 1: Ensure your iPhone is updated to iOS 18 via Settings > General > Software Update.
- Step 2: Open the Messages app without cell or Wi-Fi service. You’ll be prompted to connect to a satellite.
- Step 3: Move to an open area with a clear view of the sky and follow the instructions.
Additional Tips
Apple offers a Satellite Connection demo in the Settings app, allowing you to practice connecting before you need it. Make sure iMessage is turned on, and consider adding important people to your emergency contacts for easier satellite communication.
While Emergency SOS via Satellite is broadly available, Messages via Satellite is currently limited to the US and Canada. These features can provide peace of mind in emergencies or off-grid situations.
