Huawei Unveils $2,800 Mate XT Ultimate Trifold Phone
Huawei’s Mate XT Ultimate is a unique “trifold” phone that folds differently than Samsung and Google’s foldable devices. Instead of flipping, the Mate XT collapses across two hinges, transforming from a large 10.2-inch tablet (almost the size of an iPad) down to a more standard 6.4-inch smartphone. There’s also a middle setting at 7.9 inches, and it can be paired with an optional folding keyboard.
Priced at around $2,800 (19,999 yuan), the Mate XT Ultimate launched shortly after Apple’s iPhone 16 event, with Huawei often timing its launches to rival U.S. tech announcements. This phone packs 256GB of storage, 16GB of RAM, a 5,600 mAh battery, a 50-megapixel main camera, and two 12MP ultrawide and periscope lenses. It weighs 298 grams and is just 3.6mm thick when unfolded, featuring a 120Hz LTPO OLED screen.
One of the standout features is its “Tiangong” hinge system, inspired by the Chinese space station. This hinge allows for internal and external folding, making it a crucial part of the phone’s design. Huawei claims it’s made from composite laminate and non-Newtonian fluid materials, which could improve durability.
The Mate XT Ultimate has already received 3.7 million pre-orders in China, even before the price was revealed. However, it’s unlikely to be available outside of China.
