Microsoft Launches ‘Windows App’ for Remote Access Across Platforms
Microsoft has unveiled a new application called Windows App, designed to allow users to run Windows and Windows-based applications on multiple platforms, including Windows, macOS, iOS, web browsers, and a public preview for Android. For many platforms, it replaces the Microsoft Remote Desktop app, traditionally used to connect to remote Windows machines, offering an easier way for users and IT organizations to run Windows software on non-Windows devices.
Despite its potentially confusing name, Windows App aims to unify access to Windows PCs with Remote Desktop, cloud-hosted Windows 365, Microsoft Dev Box, and remotely provisioned apps for work or school environments. According to Microsoft’s Windows 365 Senior Product Manager Hilary Braun, the app acts as a secure gateway to connect users across various Microsoft services, including Windows 365, Azure Virtual Desktop, and Remote Desktop.
Key improvements include streamlined account switching, enhanced device management for administrators, support for frontline workers using Windows 365, and new features like Microsoft’s “Relayed RDP Shortpath,” which enables Remote Desktop access on restricted networks.
On macOS, iOS, and Android, Windows App completely replaces Remote Desktop. Windows users can still use the Remote Desktop Connection, though Windows App requires an account for Microsoft’s services. The app maintains features such as multi-monitor support, device redirection, and dynamic resolution resizing for Remote Desktop-equipped PCs.
