Sony Unveils Advanced XR Headset to Compete with Apple’s Vision Pro

Sony’s latest XR headset for the enterprise market, called the “Spatial Content Creation System,” was officially unveiled at the Augmented World Expo (AWE) in Long Beach, California, earlier this week. This announcement highlighted Sony’s collaboration with leading tech companies like Qualcomm.

Key features of the headset include:

  • 4K OLED Micro-Displays: Each eye has a 4K OLED micro-display, providing high-resolution visuals. The headset also includes a video see-through function with large, high-definition 1.3-type OLED micro-displays covering up to 96% of the DCI-P3 color gamut.
  • Qualcomm Snapdragon XR2+ Gen 2 AI-Chip: This powerful chip enhances the system’s performance, including image quality and tracking capabilities for XR experiences.
  • Controllers: The system includes a ring controller and a pointing controller. The ring controller is used for navigating and directing objects in XR, while the pointing controller allows precise actions in a virtual space. The pointing controller is operated with the dominant hand, and the ring controller with the opposite hand.

Sony first introduced the system at CES 2024 in January, in partnership with the health and automation brand Siemens. The hardware is intended for creators and developers across various industries, including entertainment.

Additional features include:

  • Six Cameras and Sensors: These provide heightened spatial recognition, making it easier for users to interact with peripherals and create with precision in a virtual space. This allows for the creation, viewing, and editing of 3D models in extended reality (XR).
  • Keyboard Compatibility: For added guidance and functionality, creators can use a keyboard in conjunction with the controllers while using the head-mounted display.

Despite showcasing the Spatial Content Creation System at AWE, Sony and its partners have not yet provided further details on the XR headset, such as specific technical specs, launch dates, regional availability, pricing, sales channels, or software compatibility.
