Tesla’s Smaller SUV
Tesla is reportedly developing a smaller and cheaper electric SUV, potentially giving buyers a more affordable entry point into the Tesla lineup.
According to reports, the upcoming vehicle would be an entirely new model rather than a stripped-down version of the Tesla Model Y or Tesla Model 3.

Smaller and More Affordable
The new SUV is expected to be noticeably more compact than the Model Y. Reports suggest it could measure around 14 feet long, compared to the Model Y’s roughly 15.7-foot length.
Price is expected to be the biggest selling point. Tesla reportedly wants the vehicle to cost significantly less than the Model 3, which currently starts around $37,000 in the U.S.
To keep costs down, Tesla may offer the SUV with a smaller battery pack and a single-motor setup instead of dual motors. That would likely reduce both weight and manufacturing costs, though it could also mean shorter driving range.
China Could Play a Major Role
The vehicle is reportedly planned for production in China, which remains one of Tesla’s most important manufacturing and EV markets.
Producing the model there could help Tesla lower production costs while competing more aggressively with fast-growing Chinese EV brands already dominating the affordable electric SUV segment.
Still Early in Development
At the moment, the project is reportedly still in its early stages, meaning plans could change—or even be canceled entirely.
Tesla has previously been linked to lower-cost vehicle projects before shifting focus elsewhere, including autonomous vehicles like the rumored Cybercab.
Still, demand for a smaller and cheaper Tesla has existed for years. If the company finally delivers one, it could become one of Tesla’s most important products yet, especially as competition in the EV market continues to intensify.
