Gaming laptops are getting more powerful every year, but Intel may be preparing to bring one of its biggest desktop CPU innovations to portable machines.
According to recent reporting and industry leaks, Intel’s next-generation processor plans could eventually bring its new Big Last Level Cache technology, known as bLLC, to high-performance laptops. The technology is expected to give processors access to a much larger pool of cache, potentially improving gaming performance in ways similar to AMD’s popular 3D V-Cache chips.
Cache may not be the most exciting specification for the average laptop buyer, but it can have a major impact on gaming performance. A larger cache allows the processor to keep more frequently used data closer to the CPU, reducing the time needed to retrieve information from system memory.
AMD has already demonstrated how effective this approach can be. Its X3D processors have become particularly popular among PC gamers because the additional cache can significantly improve performance in certain games.
Intel’s bLLC technology could represent the company’s answer to that strategy.
Current reports suggest that the technology may first appear on high-end desktop chips before eventually reaching Intel’s mobile processors. Intel’s future Razor Lake-HX family has been mentioned as a possible platform for bringing the technology to laptops, although the company’s plans have not yet been officially confirmed.
If Intel succeeds, gaming laptops could gain an important advantage.
Modern gaming laptops already feature powerful dedicated GPUs. However, CPU performance still matters, particularly in competitive games, simulation titles and games that require processors to manage large numbers of objects at once. More cache could help reduce some of those bottlenecks.
The bigger trend is also interesting. Gaming laptops are increasingly closing the gap with desktop PCs. Improvements in cooling, chip efficiency and integrated graphics have already made portable machines far more capable than they were just a few years ago.
Intel bringing a major cache innovation to laptops would push that trend even further.
For now, the technology remains on Intel’s future roadmap and is still shrouded in rumors. But if bLLC makes its way into gaming laptops, the next generation of portable gaming machines could become much more competitive with their desktop counterparts.
