TikTok Introduces Group Chats to Enhance Social Interaction
TikTok is expanding its platform’s social features by adding group chats, allowing users to connect with up to 32 people at once. This new feature enables users to share, watch, comment, and react to videos together, all within TikTok, making it more than just an entertainment platform.
Previously, people would share TikTok videos through other messaging apps like WhatsApp or Apple’s Messages. Now, TikTok users can do all of this directly on the platform, indicating that TikTok aims to become a space for friends to converse and interact, not just a place to view content from strangers.
Group chats are available only to users aged 15 and older. For teens between 16 and 17, TikTok has implemented safety features. Teens can only be added to group chats by mutual followers, and they can only join if the group already includes a mutual friend. Additionally, when a teen creates a group chat, they must review and approve any new members before they join.
To start a group chat, users can tap the “Chat” button at the top of their inbox, select “More options,” choose the friends to include, and then click “Start group chat.” To join an existing chat through an invite, users simply tap on the invite and click “Join group.”
In addition to group chats, TikTok has introduced custom stickers in direct messages (DMs). This feature allows users to create and upload their own stickers, adding a fun and personalized touch to their conversations.
