Google Introduces “Screen Time Reminders”

Doomscrolling and excessive app use might feel satisfying in the moment, but they can take a toll on mental health and productivity. To help users manage their screen time, Google has unveiled a new feature called “Screen Time Reminders” as part of its Digital Wellbeing tools. Available on Pixel and select Android devices, this feature aims to subtly remind users about the time they spend in specific apps, helping them maintain a healthier relationship with their devices.

What Are Screen Time Reminders?

Screen Time Reminders are occasional on-screen notifications designed to nudge users when they’ve spent a significant amount of time in an app. These small pop-ups appear at the top of the screen and are more passive than app limits. Unlike app timers that prevent further use after a set duration, reminders simply notify users of their current app usage.

The frequency of these reminders varies based on the app but generally ranges from every 15 to 30 minutes. For instance, a TikTok binge might trigger reminders at regular intervals, gently encouraging users to step away.

Customizable App Settings

By default, Screen Time Reminders are enabled for all apps, but users can disable them for specific applications by tapping the pop-up notification. Additionally, these reminders can work alongside app time limits. For example, if you set a two-hour daily limit for TikTok, a reminder might alert you after 30 minutes, helping you better manage your overall usage.

This layered approach offers flexibility. You can use reminders as a gentle push to pause or combine them with strict app limits to ensure you don’t exceed your desired daily screen time.

Device Availability and Compatibility

Google’s Digital Wellbeing tools, including Screen Time Reminders, are available on Pixel smartphones and a variety of other Android devices, such as those from OnePlus, Oppo, and Nothing. However, Samsung devices currently lack this feature, as the company uses its own suite of Digital Wellbeing tools that don’t include reminders.

If you don’t use a Samsung phone, you can expect this new feature to roll out soon, giving you an easy way to track and manage your app usage.
