Google has officially unveiled its Pixel 11 lineup, bringing its latest flagship phones together with a new generation of hardware, cameras and, unsurprisingly, artificial intelligence.
The Pixel 11 is Google’s 11th-generation Pixel phone, and the company is putting a major emphasis on making the device feel more proactive rather than simply adding another collection of AI-powered features.
The new phones are powered by Google’s latest Tensor G6 processor, which is designed to handle more AI processing directly on the device. Google says the new chip brings improvements in performance and efficiency while also introducing upgraded security through its Titan M3 security system.
The cameras have also received attention. Google says the Pixel 11 series comes with upgraded camera hardware and new computational photography features designed to improve the way the phone captures and processes images.
But the biggest change may be what Google is doing with Gemini.
Instead of treating its AI assistant as something users manually open when they need help, Google is pushing Gemini deeper into the Pixel experience. The company describes the Pixel 11 as its most personal Pixel yet, with Gemini becoming more proactive and capable of helping users across different parts of the phone.
One particularly interesting feature uses Google’s AI research to recognize American Sign Language and convert it into typed text, allowing users to communicate through gestures rather than typing.
However, the Pixel 11 is already generating debate.
Some Pixel users have criticized the new lineup for what they see as relatively modest hardware improvements compared with the previous generation, while others have questioned Google’s pricing and memory decisions.
That criticism highlights the challenge Google faces. Smartphone hardware has matured considerably, so companies increasingly need software and AI features to make each new generation feel different.
The Pixel 11 is therefore less about completely reinventing the smartphone and more about Google’s vision of what an AI-powered phone should become.
Whether that vision is enough to convince Pixel 10 owners to upgrade remains the bigger question.
