Google Messages Update Could Make Group Chats More Transparent

If you’ve ever sent a message in a group chat hoping a specific person would see it or wanted confirmation that a direct message was read, the next Google Messages update might be a game-changer.

According to a recent beta teardown by Android Authority, Google is testing an improved Message Details menu with deeper insights than the current version. While not guaranteed for release, the update could bring several useful features.

The revamped UI would display a recipient’s name and profile picture, along with read receipts for individual users in group chats—something previously unavailable. It would also allow users to see the original message when viewing a reply and contact recipients directly from the menu.

Currently, a long press on a message only reveals basic details like the time it was sent, received, its priority status, and the phone numbers involved. However, it does not confirm if a recipient has actually read the message—especially in group chats, where read receipts typically trigger only when everyone has read it.

As one of the most widely used messaging apps, Google Messages continues to evolve. Recent updates have introduced chat deletion features and the ability to message yourself over RCS. These new message detail tools could enhance communication, but do they risk revealing too much?
