Linux Foundation Launches New Foundation to Standardize the Economics of AI

The Linux Foundation has launched a new initiative aimed at solving one of the emerging problems created by the rapid growth of artificial intelligence: how AI services should measure, price, and exchange value.

Called the Tokenomics Foundation, the new organization is focused on developing open standards for the economic infrastructure behind AI. The initiative brings together companies and organizations interested in creating common approaches for measuring the cost and value of AI services.

The timing is significant. AI systems are increasingly moving beyond simple chatbots. Companies are deploying agents that can call APIs, use other AI models, access tools, complete tasks, and interact with other software autonomously. As these systems become more complex, determining exactly how much an AI service costs — and how different services should pay each other — becomes increasingly difficult.

The Tokenomics Foundation is designed to address this problem through open-source standards rather than proprietary systems. The Linux Foundation says the goal is to create infrastructure that can be adopted across different companies and AI platforms.

The project has attracted major participants from the technology and financial sectors, including IBM and JPMorgan Chase, alongside other founding members. Their involvement reflects the growing recognition that AI is becoming an economic infrastructure problem as much as a technology problem.

Traditional software pricing is relatively straightforward. A user might pay a monthly subscription or a company might pay based on the number of API requests it makes. AI introduces additional variables, including tokens processed, compute consumed, model capability, tool usage, and the amount of work an autonomous agent performs.

For developers, these changes could eventually affect how AI applications are built. Instead of simply paying for access to one model, future applications could involve networks of AI services that exchange data, compute, and other resources.

The Linux Foundation’s involvement is also notable because of its history of building open infrastructure. Projects hosted by the organization have helped establish common standards across the technology industry.

As AI agents become more autonomous and increasingly interact with one another, having shared standards for measuring and exchanging value could become essential.

The Tokenomics Foundation represents an attempt to build that infrastructure before the AI economy becomes even more complicated.
