WhatsApp Introduces Usernames, Allowing Users to Connect Without Sharing Phone Numbers

WhatsApp is preparing one of its biggest privacy updates yet by introducing usernames, giving users a new way to connect without revealing their phone numbers. The long-awaited feature is currently in development and is expected to roll out in a future update for the messaging platform.

A New Way to Connect

Instead of sharing a phone number, users will be able to create a unique username that others can use to find and message them. The feature is designed to offer greater privacy, particularly when interacting with people outside a user’s personal contacts.

This change brings WhatsApp closer to platforms like Telegram, Signal, Instagram, and X, where usernames are already widely used for communication.

Stronger Privacy Controls

One of the biggest advantages of usernames is improved privacy. Currently, anyone you chat with on WhatsApp can see your phone number unless you take additional privacy measures. With usernames, users will be able to communicate without exposing their personal contact details.

Reports suggest WhatsApp will require usernames to follow specific rules, including the use of letters and numbers, while preventing impersonation through unique identifiers.

What to Expect

The feature is still being tested, but early previews indicate that usernames will become an optional way to connect rather than replacing phone numbers entirely. Existing accounts will continue to use phone numbers for registration and account verification, while usernames will simply provide an additional method for discovering and messaging users.

WhatsApp is also expected to notify users whenever they change their username, helping contacts recognize account updates and reducing the risk of confusion or impersonation.

A Significant Step for WhatsApp

The addition of usernames represents one of WhatsApp’s most significant updates in recent years. As online privacy becomes increasingly important, the feature gives users greater control over how they share their identity while making it easier to communicate with new people.

Although Meta has not confirmed an official release date, the feature is expected to arrive in a future WhatsApp update, bringing one of the platform’s most requested capabilities to its billions of users worldwide.
