Wikipedia has officially drawn a line in the sand on artificial intelligence. The platform now prohibits contributors from using AI tools to generate or rewrite article content—at least on the English-language version of the site.
This decision comes after months of internal debate within the community on how to handle the rapid rise of large language models. While there was general agreement that change was necessary, reaching a clear and practical solution proved difficult. The new policy reflects a compromise: restricting AI’s role while still allowing limited, controlled use.
Where AI Is Still Allowed
Despite the ban, Wikipedia hasn’t completely shut the door on AI. Editors are still permitted to use AI tools for refining their own writing—think grammar corrections or stylistic improvements. However, there’s a catch: everything must be carefully reviewed. AI can subtly alter meaning, sometimes in ways that don’t match cited sources, so human oversight remains essential.
Another exception applies to translation. Contributors can use AI for an initial translation, but they must be fluent enough to verify and correct the output before publishing. This ensures that accuracy isn’t sacrificed for convenience.
Why the Ban Matters
The core concern behind the policy is reliability. AI-generated text, while often convincing, can introduce errors or unsupported claims. Since Wikipedia relies heavily on verifiable information, even small inaccuracies can undermine trust.
There’s also the issue of detection. AI-written content isn’t always easy to spot, meaning some may still slip through—especially on pages with less active moderation. This makes strict guidelines even more important.
Interestingly, this rule only applies to the English version of Wikipedia. Other language editions operate independently and may take different approaches. For example, the Spanish version already enforces stricter rules on AI usage.
